Thistle- Dunfermline Scottish Cup Quarter Final

It was Thistle who started the liveliest of the two teams, and looked well up for the game straight from kick off. Stephane Bonnes and David Rowson both had chances but nothing came of the attacks. In the 10th minute Dunfermline had their first attack on the counter, a fast break down the right the Thistle defence caught out of position and Kenny Arthur undecided whether to close the ball down or stay on his line, the ball was squared to the back post and Dunfermline's number 18 Richie Byrne slid onto it blasting the ball into the roof of the net for his first ever Dunfermline goal.

Thistle had very few chances and when they did come were easily saved by Dunfermline keeper Stillie.

The next Dunfermline goal was on the break as well. Good play down the left and the ball was played into the path of the unmarked Barry Nicholson who had time and space a plenty to choose his spot and slotted it low past Kenny Arthur.

This effectivley ended the game, The Jags defence was lost and it was obvious to see that the 3 centre backs system was not working. There was nothing up front either, things were not looking good.

Thistle did have 1 good chance just before half time. Some hard work and closing down by Mitchell and the ball found its way to Iain Ross on the left, his low cross was met by the diving header of David Rowson but the ball was saved rather luckily by Stillie again.

After the half time break the start of the half saw Thistle being the dominant side again. Iain Ross whipped in a cross and Stephane Bonnes overhead attempt was slightly to high and hit off the top of the bar. The little Frenchman had another opportunity a few minutes later, he was played in by Britton but his shot was pushed out for a corner by Stillie.

Slack defending was to cost Thistle another goal. Crawford mangaged to get away from Madaschi and on to the right wing and played an excellent cross ball to strike partned Brewster, the veteran stiker nodded past the out rushing Arthur to make it 3-0 to the visitors.

To end off an awful performance, Grant Murray tripped Noel Hunt in the box and whistler McDonald awarded a penalty, a fight then broke out between Derek Fleming and Noel Hunt and then most of the rest of the teams joined in. Jags subsitute Fleming was given his marching orders and sent for an early bath. Pars captain Barry Nicholson stepped up to take the spot kick but it as well saved by keeper Arthur to his bottom left.

Nicholson in the last few minutes had a good chance to make amends for his penalty miss when he was played in by a nice pass, but he shot wide this time.

All in all a very dissapoinint performace from Thistle who will need to improve vastly if they want to take any points of Aberdeen on Tuesday night. The 3-5-2 formation never worked and Chiarini looked out of place.
