Super goal by that Manny sends Jags through

Last updated : 03 September 2004 By Chris Gallagher
The Jags really did make it five wins in a row this time with a hard fought but ultimately comfortable victory over a spirited Albion Rovers side.

In a reasonably warm autumn night at the Nou Camp of Lanarkshire (when compared to Cliftonhill) the New Douglas Park, one of the most promising young players in the Scottish Football League, Manny Panther notched his first goal for the club.

After 19 minutes the youngster who has represented his country at schoolboy level and been a member of a fledgling Scottish Institute of Sport squad received an Armand One pass before floating in over the Albion keeper Chris Fahey.

The slick Jags should have made it 2, minutes later but the red hot Leigh Hinds was denied by a fine stop by in form home keeper Fahey.

Any hopes of an upset were extinguished when Billy Gibson's punt out of defence allowed Hinds to home in on goal before unmercilessly despatching past the overworked and helpless Fahey from 15 yards

Including his goal and missed chances, Hinds should have grabbed a hat-trick when he spurned a chance just after the break to net.

After Danny Black was around 75 yards short (OK maybe not that much) with his back header the slippery Hinds pounced but his chip was just off target.

The elusive Hinds almost went from goal taker to goal maker on 58 minutes when his perfectly flighted cross found Andy Ross who conspired to fire into the side netting.

This miss almost let in Rovers who nicked an equalizer in 63 minutes when Graeme McCaul poked an effort past Stephen Pinkoski to half the defecit.

But in truth the Jags were never in danger of surrendering their lead and nearly made it 3 when that man Panther lashed over from 25 yards.

Nevertheless the Jags impressive away cup form this season continues and having bested Stenhousemuir and now Albion Rovers on our travels our upcoming test in the next round away to
Ross County who were vanquished not 6 days ago should hold no fears for Britton & Whyte.

Big Match Reaction
Manny Panther said: 'I am delighted to break my duck. It has been a long time coming and hopefully more will come. 'It was a great feeling to get off the mark and hopefully I can repeat the trick against Falkirk on Saturday.'

Derek Whyte said: 'We were 2-0 up and comfortable but it ended up being a nervy finish.
'Albion scored and refused to lie down but thankfully we held on.'

Albion Rovers boss Kevin McAllister said: 'I was so proud of my players after we went down 2-0 and we lost Scott Crabbe, Jim Mercer and Jamie McGowan who are highly-influential players for us.

'At one point we had two 17--year-old s, two18-year-olds, a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old on the pitch and that is an accomplished team we were up against.

'Their work-rate and effort was fantastic and they should be so proud of themselves.
'With a bunch of kids I expected damage limitation but they were unlucky in the end.'
