Alloa gave their league survival chances a boost with an outstanding victory over arch- enemies Partick Thistle.

The match produced some outstanding football, but Alloa had by far the better chances. In the 11th minute John Ovenstone took on the Partick Thistle defence, beat two men but his cross to Ross Hamilton was headed past the post.

Alloa took a deserved lead in the 24th minute when youngster Paul McLeod connected with a Robert Sloan free-kick, and his powerful downward header beat Kenny Arthur in the Thistle goal.

This goal stung Thistle into action, and they equalised in the 28th minute when defender Scott McCulloch fired in an unstoppable 30-yard free-kick which beat Allan Creer in the Alloa goal.

Ross Hamilton restored Alloa's lead in the 60th minute when he was on hand to touch home from close range a long Ovenstone throw-in.

In a game of changing fortunes, Thistle were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a 68th minute penalty. Fraser Forrest, who had just come on for Alloa, fouled Mark Roberts inside the penalty area and he stood up to take the penalty kick, which levelled the scoring.

Graeme Brown finished things off for Alloa when he scored in the 71st minute with a close-range shot.

Alloa richly deserved the points in what was a very hard-fought match, and this result will give them hope for survival.
