John Paul McBride was the toast of Firhill after giving Partick Thistle their first league win of the season.

Just seven days after the club sacked manager Gerry Collins, Partick, the last team in Britain to secure a victory, saw off a subdued Motherwell thanks to McBride's 58th-minute strike.

The home side lived dangerously in the closing moments, but held on for a memorable win.

Partick had the better of the opening exchanges but too often their most promising raids broke down with a poor final pass.

An early effort from McBride had to be watched closely by Gordon Marshall but the goalkeeper smothered the ball at his post.

Marshall had to be alert moments later when Kenny Milne sent a header across goal but he dealt with it capably.

James Grady had a chance in the 14th minute during a quick Thistle break, but his ambitious 30-yard shot was always drifting wide.

Chances were few and far between in a poor match but a long clearance from Marshall gave Motherwell their first serious sight of goal but Alex Burns' final shot was blocked by Grant Murray.

Partick should have taken the lead after half an hour when Adrian Madaschi had a free header but he could get no power on his effort and Marshall dived to save comfortably.

Grady then set up a chance for Andy Ross with six minutes of the first half left but David Partridge managed to deflect his effort for a corner which came to nothing.

Motherwell's most fluent move of the first half should have brought greater reward with just two minutes left.

Stephen Pearson and Keith Lasley combined to set up David Clarkson and Kenny Arthur managed to divert his shot for a corner.

But it was Partick who made the breakthrough after 58 minutes. McBride tried a through ball at the edge of the area, but the ball broke back to him at the edge of the area and he crashed the ball past Marshall from 22 yards.

Burns had a chance to equalize midway through the first half but he shot straight at Arthur when he had plenty of options around him.

Martyn Corrigan then carved out a chance for Derek Adams but he hurried his shot and sliced it well wide.

But Partick held on for the three points.
