Whyte is a major player!

Derek Whyte is one of the most experience players in the Thistle squad and his team mates believe he will be an important part of this season. Players like Danny Lennon and Scott Paterson have spoke out about Whyte and his talent.

"There is always this worry about being accepted," he said. "I don't have a problem there myself, but sometimes there can be a bit of resentment when a player comes in after being with clubs in the so- called big-time."

The ex-Scotland defender admitted: "I needn't have worried. I wanted to be accepted as one of the boys and that's exactly what has happened - right from the start. I am delighted to be treated as an ordinary guy."

Whyte is enjoying begining to play games again, he said "The training back home and over here has been brilliant, but you can't beat getting back into games."

As said in our preview Lambie is thinking about changing the formation and Whtye believes "A change of system or formation is no harder for defenders than it is at any other position. Besides, I like to think I am experienced enough to adapt and, at the end of the day, it's about 11 guys working and applying themselves. And there is going to be a lot of graft as well as quality needed in the SPL.

"Certainly against Derry we all felt comfortable and some of their people must have been surprised to learn this was a Thistle team with four new signings playing for the first time.

"We didn't concede a goal and the two we scored from Scott McLean and Barry Elliot were good ones. We were comfortable in defence, and although we tired a bit towards the end, that was only natural considering we didn't even have the benefit of a closed door match before coming over here."

Thistle's holiday is a big hotel with lots of space and greenery, which seem to shock Whtye.

He said: "The build-up to the season was going well in any case, but even considering the clubs I was with before, this is real five- star stuff. I can see why Thistle have earned this reputation for having a great team spirit."

Whtye was also surprise the way John and Gerry create a great atmosphere while getting down to business aswell.

"Just a few training sessions and talks with them has been enough to see how well they work together and get the rest of us motivated," Whyte said. "The gaffer has been brilliant, exactly what I thought he would be but a bit more. He is very much from the old school, but he definitely has something that works for the club.

"Fair enough, he has a swear word or two, but we have one or two back without losing any respect for the man."
