Lambie hopes team are ready to fight

Thistle need at least one win more than Hamilton in the closing weeks of the season just to take the relegation battle to the final day, and considering the Jags have failed to win in their last five matches, that's no easy task. The players insist they know exactly what is at stake, but the performances on the park haven't shown that, and former manager John Lambie isn't too sure they appreciate the predicament they are in.

Lambie took temporary charge at Firhill following the dismissal of Gerry Britton and Derek Whyte late last year, and said at the time whoever took over permanently faced a difficult task, and now he's just hoping the players can show enough fight to at least give the club a chance of avoiding the drop by setting up winner-takes-all clash at Firhill on the final day of the season.

He told The Sun: "I thought at the time that Dick Campbell was the right man for the job, and nothing has happened to make me change my mind. He's a good manager with strong ideas, but he's had to knuckle down and try and squeeze something extra out of the guys who are already here, some who simply aren't good enough.

"It's not happened as he'd have hoped because the results speak for themselves, but I firmly believe there will be massive changes next season, whatever league Thistle are in. There has to be a clear out and I think Dick knows that.

"I just wish the players realised that as well because it seems to me that some of them don't realise how serious a position they are in. The worry for me is the guys on contracts simply accept the situation because they've already got deals for next season, and others know they are probably going to be freed and may not be too bothered if the club is relegated.

"Hopefully that isn't the case but it's always a danger. I just hope all the players are professional and give everything. There are still six games to go and it's going to be a nervy run-in, a case of whichever team can hold their nerve. Accies are the team Thistle have to catch but Queen of the South and Ross County are still in the thick of it.

"Saturday's game at Palmerston is a must-win for Thistle. We have to get back-to-back victories to put pressure on the teams above us. If we do that then Firhill may just hold a sell-out, do-or-die clash on the very last day of the season. Here's hoping."
